This Module is developed and delivered on pro bono by legal experts from global leading law firm Dechert LLP. The Module outlines the key components and importance of businesses undertaking human rights due diligence. It further provides practical guidelines and tools for developing human rights due diligence for businesses and the process for undertaking business internal and supply chain due diligence to ensure business operations are not causing adverse human rights impact. Skills on undertaking human rights due diligence provide opportunities for lawyers as an emerging area of practice.

HRDD Tools and Legal Practice 

Upskilling to provide responsible business infromed legal advice and guidance to businesses, regulators and other clients on establishing robust human rights due diligence processes that ensures business operations do not cause advance human rights impact. HRDD is a tool for mitigating financial and reputational risks, ensuring ESG Sustainability and nonfinancial reporting compliance, embedding respectful consultative engagement with communities and business stakeholders and earning social license to operate.   

Emerging Trends/Jurisprudence

Understand emerging trends and developing jurisprudence on sustainability/non financial reporting and its implication for businesses in Kenya/Africa as part of global supply chain. Understand model HRDD tools that can inform legal advice for investors, businesses and regulators in ensuring business compliance with responsibility to respect human rights which include developing and communicating human rights policy commitment, implementing HRDD in operations and developing operational grievance mechanisms for effective remedy of business related adverse human rights impacts.   Regulators are requiring ESG/Sustainability compliance and non financial reporting. Matthew Banham
Partner | London | Dubai

Matthew Banham is an established practitioner who specialises in financial crime and regulatory enforcement investigations. He advises firms and individuals on complex global investigations and advises on money laundering regulations and anti-corruption compliance. He focuses his practice on multi-agency and cross-border investigations with an emphasis on international investigations. He is part of Dechert’s global, multidisciplinary ESG team.

Clare Barnard
Senior Associate | London

Clare Barnard focuses her practice on white collar crime, with experience in advising individuals, corporate entities and trusts on matters relating to corruption, fraud and financial regulation. Ms. Barnard also has experience in advising clients on civil actions for fraud and asset recovery. Ms. Barnard is also part of Dechert’s global, multidisciplinary ESG team.
